Fire Extinguisher Disposal
As a big part of English Security involves installation, servicing and recharging of fire extinguishers we have made a significant investment in facilities enabling us to ensure that end of life extinguishers are disposed of in a safe, responsible and ecological manor.
Substances requiring special attention include foams, dry powders and anti freeze. Incorrect handling of these substances can have severe ecological impact. An individual allowing certain foams to enter a water course can be subject to prosecution by DEFRA, there are several cases of this happening where heavy fines have been imposed on individuals having done so.
End of life extinguishers are discharged into special containers for processing by third party companies. The empty extinguishers are stripped to their component parts, all metals are sent for recycling, plastics and rubbers are recycled where possible. All this means that only a small percentage goes to landfill.
At English Security we feel a moral responsibility to dispose of all our end of life products in the most ecologically sound manor, this means that all electrical equipment if stripped to component level for recycling again ensuring that only a minimum quantity goes to landfill. All waste cable is sent for recycling and in some cases electrical equipment is reconditioned for reuse.
If you as an individual or company have fire extinguishers which need disposing of you must not put them with your normal waste, despite the potenential environmental impact of an extinguishers contents they are a highly pressurised container, which, when subjected to crushing machinery are likely to explode violently posing a significant and unexpected hazard to personnel.
